AACA Newsletter July 2009

From the President

Celebrate Everything!

Watching the nightly news these days can be horribly depressing: the economy stinks, countries around the world are in different states of unrest, and famous actors and musicians are dying one after another…

When I am feeling down and out, I oftentimes am reminded of Ms. Annie. She lived by herself off Fourth Street, and I drove her weekly during her chemotherapy treatments as part of the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program. Ms. Annie filled her days in the most beautiful flower garden in front of her home, and she made sure her roses were fertilized, the weeds were pulled, and her impatiens were watered. During one of our drives when she wasn’t feeling well, she suddenly said “life is good.”

Life is good, and Ms. Annie reminded me that each day is a treasure. As an organization, we have many opportunities to assist people like Ms. Annie – and our lives are made even better from those moments. Celebrate life in the coming weeks with your AACA friends:

  1. Celebrating Athens – we can truly celebrate by attending AACA’s largest fundraiser of the year on August 20th. Sign up for a shift to work the event, and buy tickets for you and your friends at our upcoming meeting.
  2. Celebrate with friends – bring a friend to our July 16th meeting! Dinner is $5 for you and free for your friends.
  3. Celebrate service – do you like gardening like Ms. Annie or do you prefer working with kids? Whatever your interests, we have ample opportunities for you to fulfill your community service requirements.

I look forward to seeing you on July 16th!

—Alison Bracewell McCullick

New Member Info Session

Help Us Reach Our Goal of 41 New Members!

Mark your calendar and invite your friends – the AACA New Member Information Session will take place Thursday, August 13 at Kathryn Rodrigue’s home. Details about AACA membership will be provided to guests, and the get-together will conclude with a hands-on service project.

Stacy Tarver is currently collecting names for women to invite, so please contact her at stacytarver@charter.net with suggestions. If you are interested in assisting at the event, please let her know as well.

In Their Shoes Walk

Saturday, October 17th is the In Their Shoes Walk! If you are interested in being on the team to walk that day, please let Natalie (Harris) or Virna know and also sign up online, www.armc.org/itsregistration. If you would like to join our cheering station that day instead of walking, we’d love to have you! We will provide sign up sheets and more information at the upcoming meeting. There are many ways to get involved and many practice opportunities to get us ready for the big day! Just ask us how! natalieharris7@gmail.com or virnamm@yahoo.com.

Volunteer Opportunities

The “Yardwork Help Day” has been moved to August 1st, in order to allow cancer patients and their families more time to sign-up for this event. Therefore, please change the date in your calender, and SAVE THE DATE for August 1st (instead of July 11th)!

Join AACA and the Jaycees as we work to support cancer patients in this hands-on service project. Imagine not being able to rake your leaves or pick up sticks because you aren’t feeling good due to radiation or chemotherapy? Through this great partnership of nonprofit organizations, local cancer patients won’t have to worry about yard work!

Sponsorships

Have you approached your business about being a sponsor of AACA? With an updated list of levels, we are now able to provide companies with maximum publicity through their sponsorship. If you know someone interested in increasing their name recognition and concerned about the battle against cancer, please encourage them to be a sponsor. Contact Amy Chisholm at cramy@mac.com to maximize their sponsorship potential!

You can reply directly to aacaservice@gmail.com if you can help out!
