AACA News April 2009

From the President

Let us not be satisfied with just giving money.
Money is not enough, money can be got,
but they need your hearts to love them.
So, spread your love everywhere you go.
-Mother Teresa

Dear Friends,

With the all uncertainties of our economy I thought this quote needed to be shared. We work tirelessly year after year in the Auxiliary to raise money to help in the fight against cancer. Every penny we raise is needed and appreciated, but money isn’t everything. With purse strings getting tighter it is important to remember our “hands on” service opportunities are just as important as writing checks.

Each member of the Auxiliary is required to work a minimum of 20 service hours. These hours are easy to get! Attending meeting even counts! Serving on all different committees is the best way to rack up your hours. Even though we are approaching the end of the year there are still tons of opportunities to get your hours. Our Tennis Tournament is in just a few weeks and there are plenty of shifts to choose from. The Clarke and Oconee Relay for Life events are the first two weekends in May and volunteers are needed! And finally Lindsay and Rachel are already working hard planning for our Fall Event in August! Take your pick!

There is so much fun to be had in the last few weeks of our Auxiliary year! It all starts next Thursday, the 16th at the home of Sheila Snead for our Wine and “Cheeeese!” party. We’ll be snapping pictures for our 2009-2010 directory and enjoying a glass on vino. The 24th & 25th is our 8th annual “Serving Up a Cure” Tennis Tournament at the UGA tennis courts.

Please continue to read on to learn how you can become more involved in our upcoming events.

I hope to see you all on the 16th!

Cheers,
Kathryn Rodrigue, President

Say “Cheeeese”... and then enjoy a glass on wine!

If you haven’t already had your picture taken for the 2009-2010 AACA Directory or you just want a glass of wine and a little time with your friends from the AACA, we hope to see you on Thursday, April 16th between 5 and 7pm. You can be in and out in 2 minutes or stick around for awhile…

But whatever you choose you definitely don’t want a “Picture Not Available” next to your name in the directory!

We need more volunteers for the following shifts: 7-8pm, 8-9pm, 9-10pm. If you are able to help out with this Relay event, please contact Stacy Tarver

We also recently found out that the Oconee County Relay could use a few more volunteers. If you are able to help out with the Oconee Relay, please contact Emma Holman (ACS Community Manager) at 706-549-4893 or Emma.Holman@cancer.org and make sure to let her know you are with the AACA.

Dimes Really Do Make a Difference:

In 2006, 6 year old Carlos listened as his Kindergarten teacher shared her experience with cancer. On the way to school one day, he found a dime and brought it to his teacher and asked that she, “Please use this dime to cure cancer.” Here is a little boy whose heart reached out to help other people. His simple act of kindness motivated the Pottstown, PA community to raise over $45,000 in the past two years for the Relay For Life.

Did you know that a water bottle can hold almost $100 worth of dimes? Help our local Relay for Life raise money by putting an empty water bottle on your desk at work and encourage friends and family to donate their dimes to help find a cure for cancer.

Please contact Alison Bracewell McCullick if you are interested in putting out a water bottle, and she will provide you with a sticker to go on your bottle that will provide information about our dime drive. All water bottles will be presented at our May Annual Meeting to the ACS representative in attendance. Dimes really do make a difference!

Fall Event 2009

The Fall Event for 2009 will no longer be a “Fall” Event as we have moved the date to August; however, planning is underway, and the event is currently scheduled for Thursday, August 20th, 2009. Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend. This year’s event will be held at The Foundry, and the theme for the event will be “Celebrating Athens”.

We are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various aspects of the planning and preparation. If you are interested in volunteering to be on the committee, please email Rachel McCarthy. We will be scheduling a meeting within the next week or so to meet with the committee and begin planning for a fantastic event.
