From the President
Recent research recommends maintaining a healthy weight to reduce your risk of developing cancer or other chronic diseases that plague women. According to the American Cancer Society, being overweight can increase your risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, kidney cancer, and several others.
When I signed up to walk in the In Their Shoes walk, I wasn’t thinking about the health benefits of preparing for the 13-mile walk. I was more concerned about whether or not I could raise $900! So far, our team is in first place for monies raised, and many of our team members have already reached their financial goal! They exemplify our “Just Do It!” attitude for this year.
Not all of us want to walk 13 miles, but there are many other ways to “Just Do It!”
1. Attend our September 17th meeting at St. Mary’s Hospital and sign up for a service project. Bring your calendar – we have options to fit your schedule and interests! Remember – 20 hours of service over the year is your goal!
2. Support Five Points businesses AND the Cancer Auxiliary! THIS Friday, September 11th, spend a little money at Five Points businesses with purple balloons outside their storefronts and know that they are donating 10% of their profits that day to AACA! I’m planning to buy my chai tea at Jittery Joes and eat lunch at the Royal Peasant…
3. Mark your calendars and get to know other AACA members at our two October “Just Do It!” events – a wine and cheese girls’ night at Christy Norton’s home on October 15th and eat dinner at Allen’s on October 26th.
I look forward to seeing you this Friday in Five Points and next Thursday at St. Mary’s!
Alison McCullick
Don’t miss out on the fun September 17th!
By now you should have received an Evite inviting you to our next General Meeting – and we want everyone there to officially kick off our year. When you arrive, you will have the opportunity to participate in a “Community Service fair” and learn more about volunteering through AACA.
Our program speaker will share information about the St. Mary’s Hospice House and the need it fills for families dealing with cancer.
To help cancer patients going through chemo, please bring small, non-scented lotion bottles (Eucerin is the best!) to the meeting that can be donated to area chemotherapy facilities.
Dinner will be $5 and provided by Moe’s. Feel free to bring a friend – just note your friend on your rsvp.
There is a small fee for parking in St. Mary’s parking lot (approximately $2). There is free parking at the library across the street or the Moe’s parking lot next door.
If you have any questions, please contact Alison McCullick. See you there!
Volunteer Opportunities
Food Donations for Fundraising Event:
We once again have an opportunity to support the Northeast Georgia Cancer Care Foundation. On September 24th they are hosting a Bunco fundraiser at the Overlook in downtown Watkinsville. We need 10 members to provide finger foods, chips/dip, etc. for the event. There is not a way to heat things up or keep them warm, so please think of cold items to bring. If you are interested in helping out, please email: aacaservice@gmail.com and let us know what you’ll be bringing! You can drop off items between 12-3pm at NE GA Cancer Care, or between 4:30-5:30pm at the Overlook.
Also, if you’re interested in playing in this fun event, you can contact Kimberly Liebowitz for more information: kliebowitz@negacancer.com.
Yard Work Help Day:
The first Yard Work Help Day was a great success! Thanks to those that helped out. Leaves were raked, grass was mowed, flowers were planted, and smiles were made. Through a partnership with the Jaycees, we were able to help out five different families last Saturday. We will be doing this project again on Saturday, October 24th, so mark you calendars now! Believe me, two hours working with friends goes by quickly!
Other Opportunities:
Check out the info on helping with the In Their Shoes cheering stations as well. Or help at the Sip & Stroll. There are lots of great opportunities to volunteer! We’ll have even more to share at the September meeting — bring your planners! Hope to see you there!

In Their Shoes
In Their Shoes is scheduled for Saturday, October 17th. If you’re interested in joining the team (AACA-Fit to Fight), please let us know! You can register online at www.armc.org/itsregistration. www.intheirshoesathens.org to find out more about the 13.1 mile walk. We have 13 girls signed up and on their way to meeting their fundraising goal of $900/person.
We will need volunteers during the Walk to help us cheer on our team at our cheering station; a sign up sheet will be available at the AACA meeting on Sept.17th.
We also will be selling t-shirts for the In Their Shoes Walk. The shirts are $10 and we will have a sign up sheet and a copy of the design available at the meeting. If you know of someone who has battled cancer and you would like to honor them by placing their name on the back of the ITS t-shirt, please let us know! The cost is $25 per name and the money raised goes towards our ITS team!
