AACA Newsletter October 2009

From the President

Lung cancer. Pancreatic cancer. Breast cancer. And those are just the cancers my mom’s side of the family has faced over the last 18 years. I would daresay your family’s story is similar.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and I am proud to wear pink – year-round, actually – in honor of my mother and aunt. But there are so many varieties of cancer that we have all faced within our circle of family and friends. The color purple was selected for AACA’s letterhead, logo, and In Their Shoes t-shirt because purple is the color for ALL cancers.

I recently spoke with one of our newest members, and she said what she liked most about the Cancer Auxiliary was the clarity of our mission and goals. We are a group of women volunteers who work tirelessly to eradicate cancer through education, awareness, service projects and fundraising efforts to support local cancer causes – and we have fun doing all this work because we have a passion for fighting cancer.

How will you “just do it” this month? Will you cheer on walkers at In Their Shoes? Will you clean up a cancer patient’s yard? Will you help paint the new American Cancer Society patient room? Will you drive a patient to a treatment? Will you have a glass of wine at our Just Do It event or eat a burger at Allen’s to support AACA? Look at our calendar for this month and find a way that you can make a difference in the battle against cancer.

I look forward to seeing you later this month!

Alison Bracewell McCullick

Community Service

Saturday, October 24th is a big day for service!

The first Yard Work Help Day was a great success, so we’re doing it again! From 8:30am-11:30am on the 24th we’ll be helping cancer patients and their families with tasks around the house and yard work that they are not able to do. This is a great service opportunity for those looking to directly serve cancer patients in need.

We also have a great opportunity to help decorate and organize the American Cancer Society’s NEW patient resource room. Join us at noon on the 24th, and stay as long as you can! There may be painting involved, organizing caps and wigs, and more! Help get this great community resource up and running.

If you can help with either of these service opportunities, please email: aacaservice@gmail.com — even if it’s for part of the time, it’s still a huge help!

We’d also like to thank Meredith Miller, Leigh Garrett, & Anisa Jimenez for helping cover the Camp Sunshine event on the 24th.

Finally, don’t forget to track your hours through the Goggle Docs link that was sent to you towards the end of September. If you are having problems with your link or need it resent, just email: aacaservice@gmail.com.

In Their Shoes News

In Their Shoes Walk is Saturday, October 17th! We still need volunteers for our cheering station that day as we cheer on our AACA Fit to Fight Team. The shifts are 9:00-11:00 and/or 11:00-1:15. Please let Natalie (Harris) know if you’re available, natalieharris7@gmail.com.
*If you ordered a Fit to Fight t-shirt, you can pick those up at the Just Do It event on Thursday, October 15th.

Just Do It! Drop-by Event

Stop by Christy Norton’s home to have a glass of wine and say hello to Cancer Auxiliary friends. Our In Their Shoes tshirts will be available for pick-up, and a fabulous raffle will help raise a few extra dollars for our team!

Hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be available, so stop by on your way home for work or on your way out to dinner. The event is casual and fun – and we can’t wait to see you there!

Christy Norton, Kelli Dean, and Jill Barrow (the Just Do It team)

We will be gathering items associated with our Holiday Service Projects at Tinsel and Toddy. Two projects will be assisting families battling cancer during the holiday season – further details coming soon!
